For young athletes, watching the pros play on television can be intimidating. Yet all athletes—from beginners to professionals—have to start with the basics. Some of the following sports require more strength then speed. Some require hand-eye coordination over balance and poise. But every sport will allow you to practice a skill that you didn't even know you had.
Baseball & Softball
In baseball, two teams play against each other on a field called a "diamond." The field is divided into an infield and an outfield.

Basketball
Basketball is a sport played with a round ball on a court with two ten-foot high baskets on opposite sides.

Cross Country Running
Cross-country running is both a recreational and a competitive sport. At the high school level, cross-country running competitions, called "meets," take place between a number of teams.

Fishing
Fishing is the sport of catching fish from a water source, whether it be a lake, river, or an ocean.

Football
Football is played on a 100-yard field which is divided every 5 yards by yard lines. Located at opposite ends of the field are end zones and goal posts used for scoring.

Golf
Golf is a game played on a course with 18 different holes. The object of the game is to hit the golf ball into the hole with as few strokes as possible.

Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a sport that requires extreme flexibility, balance, and strength.

Hiking
Hiking is a perfect choice for getting outdoors to see Alaska's amazing landscape.

Soccer
Soccer, the sport also called football outside of America, is officially played with a leather or vinyl ball on a field with two netted goals.

Swimming
Swimming is a year-round sport for all ages. Swimmers who want to compete should consider joining a school or city league team.
