Sports have been developed throughout history for competition, physical challenge, and entertainment. Some of the modern sports that have evolved in Alaska, a state of unparalleled terrain and extreme climates, originated out of necessity. The sport of dog mushing, for example, celebrated during Fur Rondy in February and the Iditarod in March, began as a means of transportation over snow and ice. Then, about a century ago, the state of Alaska became the first place in the world to recognize dog mushing as a formal sport! What was once a means of survival has now become an enjoyable activity for competitors and spectators alike.
The sports that are highlighted on Get Active are only a snapshot of those available to Alaskan kids today.
