Snowshoeing has made it possible for people to walk and run over deep snow. The sport is similar to hiking except that snowshoes are strapped to the feet. The increased surface area of the snowshoe helps prevent the feet from sinking into snow. Snowshoes are designed many ways, and can be made of metal, wood, or plastic, but most are generally aluminum with webbing. Warm, waterproof boots are important to wear with snowshoes because fresh snow will give more than packed snow. In areas of mountainous terrain, snowshoers should have avalanche training. The sport of snowshoeing is mainly considered a recreational activity but races are gaining popularity.
