Medium-sized fish with no lateral line, large mouth, no teeth or jaws, no adipose fin
Mainly at sea and in estuaries; spawns in shallow waters over eelgrass, kelp, or rocks. Young live in shallow bays and inlets before moving to deeper waters.
Adults feed on copepods, amphipods, euphausiids, mollusks, larvae, small fish. Young feed on copepods, invertebrate eggs, diatoms.
